Hadlee returns verbal delivery

New Zealand’s top cricketer, Richard Hadlee is disappointed by a statement made this week by the test captain, Geoff Howarth, in Christchurch.

A newspaper article said that Hadlee had expressed the wish to become number three in the test pace attack as soon as possible. Howarth had called on Hadlee to “accept his responsibility as New Zealand’s main strike bowler.” He had also said that he had heard of Hadlee’s recent ill health but felt a little much might have been made of it. The report quoted Howarth as saying, “It’s probably all good publicity for his new book.” Hadlee said that Howarth had misconstrued some remarks he had made in Auckland.

“I am quite happy to do the number one’s job but I would be even happier if New Zealand had two other bowlers who would allow me to be number three,” he said.

Referring to his state of health Hadlee said that he hoped that Howarth was joking in his remarks. “I wish it was only publicity for my book,” he said.
