Police drill to change

PA Auckland An inquiry into the shooting of a policeman during an anti-terrorist exercise would lead to modifications in future training of that type, a police spokesman has said.

The Auckland police chief, Assistant Commissioner B. W. Gibson, said that an inquiry had been completed into the acciden-

tal shooting of Sergeant D. A. P. Geraghty, aged 34, wounded in the stomach with a blank cartridge in an exercise at the Southdown freezing works. Mr Gibson said details of the inquiry would not be disclosed. However, he said, that as a result of the inquiry, the organisation and scenarios for such exercises would be

“modified to avoid future mishaps.” Sergeant Geraghty, discharged from hospital a few days after the accident on November 16, is recuperating at home.

He was shot at close range with a blank fired by a “terrorist” during an exercise involving anti-terrorist squad members from Auckland and Wellington.
