Crack in dam at Waipori
PA Dunedin A crack has appeared in the Dunedin City Council’s No. 3 dam at Waipori, but council officials say it is not in danger of collapsing.
The crack in the 120mhigh dam is believed to be associated with rock movement on the true right abutment, and engineers are monitoring both the dam and the rock. The council awaits a report on the extent of the damage from engineering consultants, within the next few days.
The chairman of the council’s trading committee, Cr I. W. McMeeking, said the dam, part of the city’s electricity generation system near Dunedin, was not in danger of imminent collapse. The council says that if the dam does collapse, it will not pose a hazard to downstream settlements and farms.
