Care of terminally ill studied
Care for terminally ill patients will be investigated by the North Canterbury Hospital Board. The success of a four-bed hospice at Burwood Hospital and more Government encouragement for- the establishment of hospices has led to the review. The board’s health services committee yesterday set up a sub-committee to look at©he needs of the terminally ill in the area. Dr R. A. Fairgray, the
board’s medical superin-tendent-in-chief, said the Burwood hospice could not easily be expanded at the moment. However, the board should consider the Government’s suggestion of board contracts with private hospices, and the funding involved. Patients who died while al Christchurch or The Princess Margaret hospitals accounted for 1147 of the region’s 2700 deaths last year.
