Workshop series to start

More than 30 people from throughout the South Island will attend a series of workshops in Christchurch next week organised by the Canterbury W.E.A. Adult Reading Assistance Programme. The workshops, which will start on Monday, will be held at the Sullivan Avenue site of the Christchurch Polytechnic and will include writing, programmes for the unemployed, and working with those in prison or on probation. Week-end workshops will also be held for the trainers and co-ordinators of schemes to help adults with reading, writing, spelling, and basic mathematical difficulties. The Christchurch scheme is one of 120 similar programmes throughout the country. They depend on volunteer tutors. Its co-ordinator, Mrs Barbara Petre, said that since the programme began in Christchurch in 1977 it had grown to include 190 students and 165 tutors.
