N.I. wins first polo ‘test’

The North Island has drawn first blood in the first of three inter-island polo “tests” being held at the Canterbury A. and P. show. Yesterday it beat the South Island 5-3 in a fourchukka exhibition game. The North had much to thank its captain, Phillip Thompson, for. He clearly justified his handicap of five and proved the most consistent player on the ground, scoring four of his team’s goals.

The pace of the game began to take its toll during the final chukka, as both ponies and players tired. Sticks went in a flurry in all directions, the ball was over-run, and luckily for the southerners, there was enough time to scramble its defence- when the North Island team looked like going further ahead. Minutes from the end, the South had a golden chance to add to the score when Calder appeared set to pounce on the ball which had been powered upfield by Storer. It was a little ironical that Calder, who had played so well, over-ran the ball but it typified the effort he and his team had put into the match.
