Protesters jeer Ambassador

Jeers of “Yankees out” greeted the United States Ambassador to New Zealand, Mr Monroe Browne, when he arrived at a Christchurch meeting yesterday.

Policemen almost outnumbered a handful of Latin American. group members outside the Winter Garden with placards protesting against the United States-led invasion of Grenada.

Mr Browne arrived about 30 minutes late because of a delayed flight from Wellington, to address a luncheon meeting of the Christchurch Rotary Club. One of the protesters, Ms Lyn Jackson, said the American-led invasion had been planned Jong before the military coup which killed Grenada’s Prime Minister, Mr Maurice Bishop. They feared Nicaragua would be next oh the list. Some of the 200 Rotarians who attended the meeting were asked by to

question Mr Browne on the number of Grenadans killed in the invasion and when American troops were withdrawing. However, no questions were asked after his address on the optimitic outlook for recovery of the American economy. One reason for Mr Browne’s visit is to see his wife’s horse, Lacka Reason, run in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton today. He will also address the Christchurch branch of the Institute of International Affairs this evening at the University Staff Club.
