Charlies Beaufort makes it six wins in a row

By

W. R. CARSTON

John (Snow) Campbell must surely consider himself one of racing’s luckiest owners. Just before the end of last season he was offered and accepted a halfshare in Charles Beaufort and since then the horse has never stopped winning.

“Snow” is now a member of a three-sided partnership who saw their four-year-old son of Beaufort Sea and Candy Town come up with his sixth win “on the trot” when he beat John Peel handily and 14 others easily

in the Stevens Banks Peninsula Cup at Motukarara on Saturday.

The other partners in the Christchurch-based syndicate are Ron and Nancy Simpson who have shared in the ownership of Charles Beaufort all along. Ron Simpson purchased the horse from his Ashburton breeder, Allan Mclntosh, when he was only 11 months old. For the Simpsons he had already won two races as a three-year-old before his present winning sequence began. Although Saturday’s race was Charles Beaufort’s first

since his Ashburton Cup victory early in September and many thought he would probably need the run, his backers never had one anxious moment while he coasted along in front through the last 1100 m and did not have to cope with any serious challenges in the run home.

John Peel, the North Canterbury Cup winner at Rangiora six days earlier, made a gallant attempt under difficulties to make it two in a row. Although unable to get to grips with the winner he showed gameness to run Charles Beau-

fort to a length with a twisted plate and a clash on the inside of his other forleg.

Noble Jewel, four places from the lead and following John Peel all the way, was a battling third in a gap of three lengths. Paddy Speed, close to the pace all the way, saved fourth by a nose from Handsome Heir which was followed home by Pamdora, a solid finisher from far back. One of the unfortunate incidents of racing occurred early in the contest when the Takanini visitor, Errol Flynn, faded fast from the

pace after they had gone 800 m and was pulled up. It was found that he had bled badly from both nostrils. Riccarton’s Dave Kerr,, having his best season as a trainer — besides Charles Beaufort his team includes two other top performers in Clansman and Gaffa — will be going for further racing riches next Saturday when he lines Charles Beaufort up in the $31,000 Benson and Hedges Gold Cup. The following week the horse is likely to have a tilt at New Zealand Cup honours.
