The Queen meets Sophia
NZPA London The Queen yesterday met Spain’s Queen Sophia for the first time since the Spanish Royal family failed to attend the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1981 in protest against the honeymoon starting from Gibraltar. But it was all smiles yesterday at the christening of former King Constantine of Greece’s daughter, Theodora.
Both Queens agreed to be godmothers to the five-month-old baby, the former King’s fourth child. Queen Sophia was accompanied by her son, Crown Prince Philippe. But King Juan Carlos did not attend.
The two Queens were among many heads of Europe at the service at the
Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Bayswater, west London. Before the ceremony, former King Constantine greeted the Queen, who was dressed in matching pink hat and coat, with a kiss on the cheek and hand.
The former King is godfather to Prince William. But the crowd outside the cathedral were disappointed that Prince Charles and the Princess of Wales were unable to be at the ceremony.
Princess Theodora was born at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, in the same ward as Prince William.
The former King Constantine has said that Prince William’s birth inspired him and his wife, Danish bom former Queen Anne-Marie, aged 37, to try for a fourth child.
