Hillary to continue Nepal climb
NZPA Katmandu, Nepal Peter Hillary, aged 28, the son of Sir Edmund Hillary, has decided to resume his climb on Makalu-I in spite of the death of a colleague on the 8463-metre peak in north-east Nepal. In a letter from his base camp dated October 7, Hillary said, “I have decided to continue the (New Zealand) expedition after the death of Mr Denz by an avalanche on October 3.” A member of the fourman team, Mathew William Denz, aged 32, of Dunedin, was syrept away by an
avalance while descending from the 6400-metre camp two to camp one at 5800 m together with an Australian comrade, Robert From. From managed to extricate himself, but Denz was buried under three to four metres of debris and his body was not recovered. After the accident, the other team members descended to the base camp on October 4.
Hillary informed Katmandu that “we will make our attempt via the west pillar (ridge) as a three-man team over the week or so.”
