No elect toms but... P.M.
PA Wellington The Prime Minister last evening dismissed a suggestion that he might call an early election because of the Government’s dispute with the Public Service Association.
The suggestion was raised in a television interview and also by the secretary of the Canterbury region of the P.S.A., Mr J. M. McKenzie.
Mr Muldoon said on television he was not seeking an early election and saw no need to call one.
When pressed by the interviewer, he said that if the dispute over power supplies reached a complete stand-off, it might be necessary to have one, but he said it was a long way from that stage yet. Earlier Mr McKenzie said the Government’s ulterior motive in the dispute was to have an election in six to eight weeks.
The only short-term election in recent New Zealand history was in 1951, called by a National Government after the prolonged, national waterfront strike.
