General forecast: An active cold front preceded by rain and strong to gale northerlies should lie east of the North Island by mid-morning. A cool southerly airstream over the South Island will bring a few showers about eastern and southern coasts but fine or becoming fine elsewhere. District forecasts:

Canterbury: Fresh cool southerlies slowly moderating; showers, gradually becoming confined to North Canterbury, bright intervals developing elsewhere. Marlborough: Cold souther-
