DIRECTOR MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIA THE MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIA was established by Active Parliament in 1980 and will have three themes; the history of aboriginal people, the history of Australia since 1788 and the interaction between people and the Australian environment. These themes are to be interwoven in the conceptual interpretation of Australia’s first National Museum of History. The Museum has four main functions: To develop and maintain a national collection of historical material; to exhibit, or to make available for exhibition by others, historical material; to conduct, arrange for or assist in research into matters pertaining to Australian history; and to disseminate information relating to Australian history and information relating to the Museum and its functions. “History” is defined as including the natural history of Australia. The initial planning for the Museum of Australia has been undertaken by an'lnterim Council. The Government has recently approved this Council’s recommendation that the Museum be located on a lakeside site a short distance from the centre of the national capital, Canberra. The entire complex is planned for completion in 1990, marking a significant opening to the last decade of the 20th century and carrying on the momentum of Australia’s Bicentennial in 1988. The Director, who has the powers of a permanent head in the Australian Public Service, will be required to provide intellectual and managerial leadership to the Museum and to give high level advice to the Council of the Museum of Australia. To plan, develop and manage the organisation with full regard to efficiency, economy and innovation; to develop new ideas; to maintain liaison with leaders of relevant bodies and similar institutions in Australia afid overseas; and to bring forward proposals to meet the changing needs of the Museum. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have had extensive management experience with knowledge of museums desirable. Imagination, Initiative, vigour and constructiveness of a high order are essential. ANNUAL SALARY: Remuneration will be as determined by the Remuneration Tribunal and is currently sAust49,loo p.a. plus an allowance of sAustl67s, these rates having been determined in July, 1982, and variation of them having been precluded by the salary and Wage Pause Act 1983; prior determinations equated the position to that of a Level 4 Officer in the second division of the Australian Public Service, presently in receipt of sAusts2,3so p.a. plus an allowance. The Salary and Wage Pause Act has been repealed and a new determination can be expected in due course. TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment will be for a maximum of seven years and may be renewed. Superannuation benefits for eligible applicants and other assistance with removal expense and leave entitlements as normally apr pllcable to such appointments will be available. An appointee who is an officer of . the Australian Public Service retains all existing and accruing rights during service with the Museum.
