EPITAPH For the uninitiated speech-making can be a frightening experience. And even those well-versed in the art stumble from time to time.
A few weeks ago in Christchurch a summer sports club held its opening. The president had done his homework and he had neatly compiled notes on the topics he wished to mention.
There were a number of V.I.P.S, including the local member of Parliament and local body representatives, on hand.
Before introducing them to the gathered assembly, the president noted that some members had passed away since the end of the previous season. From his pocket he took a list and two or three names had passed his lips before an undignified clamour made him aware that something was wrong.
The list he was reading was of the V.I.P.S standing alongside him.
The member of Parliament at least had the wit to note that in his game one could never be 100 per cent sure of who was dead and who was alive.
