Painting sold for $17,000
PA Auckland A painting entitled “Korero,” by Commander Richard Aidworth Oliver, fetched $17,000 at an auction in Auckland last evening. Oliver paintings depict early life and customs in the Bay of Islands, Wellington, and the South Island from 1847 to 1851. The Alexander Turnbull Library was keen to buy the 21 Oliver paintings, but most were bought by private dealers.
The highest price last evening was $19,000 for “The Farmpond,” painted by Frances Hodgkins.
