PA Auckland Air New Zealand scheduled 213 domestic flights yesterday — 36 more than usual — to cope with the increased demands of Labour Day week-end traffic.
All told, 11,591 passengers were expected to arrive at their destinations round the country, though not without some nail-biting by the traffic co-ordinator, Mr John Webb.
Nelson Airport was closed, the West Coast and Wellington — the “pivot of New Zealand” — were marginal with low cloud and poor visibility, and strong winds gusted in Auckland. On Monday, 43 extra flights are expected to cope with passenger levels slightly higher than last year’s week-end tally.
