North Korean complaint
Sir,—ln the bottom half of a story on page 10 of “The Press” last Saturday we learn of a North Korean complaint that South Korean troops recently invaded the demilitarised zone and fired on a North Korean post. Imagine the front-page headlines that would announce a comparable Complaint by South Korea against the North. The Vietnam war taught us that one cannot always accept the American side’s story as fact. At present, the Korean peninsula needs only a “Gulf of Tonkin incident” to start a war, and the growing unpopularity of Chun Do Hwan’s regime suggests he might try to manufacture one. So the North Korean complaint may be based on fact A peaceful solution to Korean problems will require sanity in the rest of the world. That calls for more balanced news than we are getting. — Yours, etc.,
