Antarctic Treaty

Sir,—Your recent editorial on the Antarctic Treaty (October 18) was thoughtful. Indeed, there is now a serious international challenge to the treaty system itself, and a possible outcome of the moves within the United Nations could be a recommendation that the treaty be torn up and the administration pass to a totally different body. At Canberra even some signatories to the treaty did not find responses of the consultative parties adequate, particularly in respect of the minerals question. The Antarctic Treaty is doomed as greed and nationalism replace the former co-operative spirit. If territorial claims cannot be abandoned and a new regime be set up which guarantees world scientific park status, the fate of Antarctica will be yet one more example of the arrogance of mankind which knows no rest until it has dominated and fouled everything natural—and not even then.—Yours, etc.,

ERIC BENNETT. October 21, 1983.
