Dentists one-up in talks

PA Hamilton Dentists in eight centres held a conference yesterday without leaving their home towns.

Delegates in Hamilton, Auckland, Napier, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill were the first group in New Zealand to use a new communications system devised and built at the University of Otago in Dunedin, the control point for the event.

They could listen to speakers, ask questions, and watch slides controlled through the Dunedin “master box,” but with two-way communication possible between the centres.

The system is a big step forward from telephone conferences, and, according to Waikato University’s continuing education registrar, Mr David Guy, foreshadows a time when such conferences will be conducted on personal computers.
