D. Healey makes history

NZPA Sydney The New Zealand jockey, Debbie Healey, made Geelong racing history when, as the first woman to ride in the $30,000 Geelong Cup she rode a top race on Deb’s Mate to lead from start of finish. Deb’s Mate showed his supreme mastery of soft going to cruise to the lead shortly after a perfect start, and loped along in front until the pair reached the home turn, when he effortlessly cleared out from the rest and won by five lengths with plenty in reserve. The Palm Beach gelding’s control was such that if the Moonee Valley track is soft for the Cox Plate on Saturday, he will give his more illustrious rivals McGinty, Sir Dapper, Emancipation and Strawberry Road a decent run for their money.

Deb’s Mate had the race virtually to himself and from the 800 m never looked like losing.

1 Allez Bijou was second, with the seven-year-old Century entire, Centra Briseis, third.
