Joy Boy should reach Cup class tonight

Joy Boy will only have to reproduce his fine effort at Forbury Park last Saturday to take the final step to New Zealand Cup class in* the Mazda Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway this evening.

The merit in the winning run of Joy Boy last week can be gauged from the fact that the track was not considered as fast as when Sapling' and then Roydon Scott recorded 3min 30.15, the best ever for 2700 m at Forbury. And Joy Boy equalled that figure quite comfortably, stamping him as a five-year-old of great ability, especially when the class of the other jointholders of the record is considered. Diamond Moose, a C 8 horse, raced over 3200 m at Ashburton on October 1 at his most recent start. He was handicapped on 30m, covered extra ground and was never really a chance in the race won by Timely Play in fast time. He has already proved as good as any in this race and, if allowed to dictate his own pace, he will take some catching.

Borana was allowed to by-pass Joy Boy’s race at Forbury last week. Seven nights earlier he was an unlucky fourth to Enterprise. The speedy four-year-old has shone when started against Hands Down, Our Mana and company and must be entitled to serious consideration.

Mighty Me, a splendid second to Lucky Boy on September 16, and Right Bower have sound form backgrounds and they could be dangers.

Much interest will centre Hilarious Guest, which performed so dismally at Ashburton when making a fresh start. She should be improved by racing at trials since then, but is set a stiff assignment from 20m. Of the others probably Kind Nature and Stortford Lodge will do best.
