New racing yacht for Sydney
A piece of cargo loaded aboara the Darwin Trader at Lyttelton yesterday has the potential to be a sporting star. Special care was taken to loan a new 11m yacht, Just James, which will be ca tied by the Darwin Trader irom New Zealand to its new owner in Sydney.. The yacht, said to cost about (80,000, was built in Christchurch by lan Franklin Boatbuilders. Its owner, Mr Jim King, an Australian importer, Blanned to enter the vessel in le Sydney to Hobart race later this year, Mr Franklin said. The sleek fibreglass yacht was constructed to a New Zealand design and took four months to build. Mr Franklin said his company was getting a lot of Australian work as the local market was “pretty depressed.” Australians hoping to have a yacht built often looked to
New Zealand companies to do the work because of the “competitive” prices offered here. According to Mr Franklin, New Zealand boatbuilders could undercut their Australian counterparts even after paying the freight charges and import duties involved in sending a vessel across the Tasman.
Just James was stowed aboard the Darwin Trader in a conventional container slot. The vessel, run by the Aus-, tralia National Line in association with the Shipping Corporation, calls regularly at Lyttelton as part of her Tasman run.
