‘Think road safety’
PA Wellington Drivers this week-end should think road safety, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Gair, yesterday. “If recent week-end accident trends are continued, Labour Day week-end will not be a bappy time for some people” he said. “There is now every indication that respect for safety on our roads has started to decline again. “I implore drivers to ‘think road safety’ and to drive defensively this weekend.”
For much of the year the road toll had been below the figure for the corresponding period last year. However, the toll this month so far was already ahead of October last year. Mr Gair said Labour Day week-end had traditionally been the first opportunity to make longer trips after the winter, but vehicles were not always in the best condition, journeys were not always well planned, and the weather was sometimes bad.
The results could be traumatic, he said.
