Battle of El Alamein
Infantry Day will be celebrated today by the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment.
Infantry Day commemorates the Battle of El Alamein on October 23, 1942. This marked the beginning of Field Marshal Lord Montgomery’s campaign which led to the eventual defeat of Field Marshal Rommel and the Afrika Corps in North Africa. The 2/1 Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, will hold a battalion parade at 8.15 a.m. today and will follow this with a church service at All Saints Garrison Chapel at Burnham.
The 2nd Battalion (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast), Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, will hold a memorial service at the Bridge of Remembrance at 12.30 p.m. today.
