General forecast: An active cold front should move eastwards over the South Island this morning preceded by a strong northerly airstream, with gales in exposed parts' of the northern South Island and central New Zealand. Widespread rain is expected over the North Island and northern South Island ahead of the front. Behind the front, lighter westerlies should become general during the day over the South Island, with showers in the west and south and fine

weather in the east. District forecasts: Canterbury: Some rain likely in the far north at first, with strong or gale force north-westerlies; otherwise fine. Nelson, Marlborough, Buller: Rain, with some heavy falls and strong mild northerlies at first; later easing to showers with winds moderating.
