New Govt grants for pig research

New Government grants will enable pig research to be stepped up at Massey University. A grant of $160,000 for 1983-84 and additional payments of $150,000 to be made in each of the following two years were announced in the recent Budget. The support is the outcome of approaches made to the Government over the past three years by the Pork Industry Board. The board was concerned about the decreasing amount of pig research being carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries at the Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre.

The new grants mean that Massey University has become the National Centre for pig research in New

Zealand. These grants are in addition to research funds already provided to Massey’s Pig Research Centre by the Pork Industry Board. For the year 1982-83, the Government provided $19,000 while $23,000 and a contribution of replacement breeding stock valued at $6OOO came from the Pork Industry Board. The board intends to continue to provide funds and in-kind support to the centre’s programmes.

Dr W. C. Smith, director of the centre, said that the increased funding will provide for laboratory facilities and enable more research and development work to be undertaken. The work will be performed mainly at the Massey University facility,

which has a herd of 60 sows, and at the nearby National Pig Breeding Centre of the Pork Industry Board which has an 185-sow herd. Also scheduled to receive a boost from the increased funding are programmes to monitor genetic progress in national herd improvement schemes. During this time the national pig carcase grading scheme is also scheduled for critical examination.

Dr Smith says that the establishment of a PostDoctoral Fellowship is also under consideration; this would enable a scientist from overseas to undertake research at the Pig Research Centre, promoting an international exchange of scientific information.
