Trentham track to Allmada’s liking

By

J. J. BOYLE

After heavy rain at Trentham on Thursday night, Allmada has come right into the boom for the Watkins Handicap, first leg of the Wellington Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today. The track was heavy yesterday, and there seemed no likelihood of any drying. That will give Allmada footing something like it was when he won the Parliamentary Handicap in style at Trentham in July.

Allmada, a five-year-old from the successful Couch-

man stable at Hawera, is well seasoned for today’s test. His three previous runs this season yielded a second and two fourths. Kiwi, the early favourite for the Watkins, became established as a stayer of quality by winning the Wellington Cup on a firm track last summer. But earlier in the season he won twice on rain-affected tracks, and the demands of the top weight in the wet today might not keep this top stayer out of contention in what might be his last race before he goes

to Melbourne. Hawera is also expected to supply the winner of the Wainui Handicap, second leg of today’s T.A.B. double. Rebel Royale, winner of five races for the GestroMcEwan stable last season, recorded one of his victories on an easy track and was placed on a soft track. Besides, he showed enough to establish himself as one of the most interesting graduates to the top grade, and he could develop into a top 1600 m performer this season.
