John Dowling’s mount in the feature race for three-year-old fillies, Auk Princess was paired with her stablemate, His Latest, to run 1000 m on the trial grass in 60.35, the last 600 m in 36.25. Clansman’s stablemate, Gaffa, showed plenty of zest for his work while running 1000 m with Five Over Five. Gaffa, with the outside running, won the gallop by a neck in 61.45, completing the last 600 m in 38.15. Charles Beaufort was restricted to lmin 34.6 s for his 1400 m, but quickened readily for his last 600 m in 39.65. The comparatively little work on the plough was notable for Marche Noir’s effort to return 60.6 s for 1000 m after giving Prinz Eugen a start and winning by a length. Marche Noir ran his last 800 m in 47.8 s on a track
that might have been expected to be slower than the grass after rain on Tuesday.
