Lord Louie has easy win at Addington

By

G. K. YULE

The Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s Lion Brown Three-year-old Series Final, to be run on October 21, looks like developing into a match race between Logan Dryham and Lord Louie.

Lord Louie won the second heat of the series at Addington Raceway last night, almost as easily as Logan Dryham succeeded in his a week earlier. He coasted over the last 200 m to win with a lot in hand from Naval Officer, which could well be one of the hardest to beat in the final, as he was three wide early and then was left without cover.

Dragoman was on the inside of Lord Louie and Naval Officer in the early rush for positions. Lord Louie eventually took the lead after a 400 m run in 28s.

Naval Officer moved up to Lord Louie 400 m out, but lan Cameron was only foxing behind the favourite. He did not have to ask him for a serious effort to

win by almost two lengths in the respectable time of 2min 33.5 s for the mobile 2000 m. “He paced better than in any of his other races and felt tremendously strong going to the line,” said Cameron. A gelding by Lordship from Flying Anette, Lord Louie is trained at Rangiora by Frank Murfitt for Mr Dan Wright. The combination looks to be in for a highly successful season. Naval Officer was unchallenged for second, finishing more than two lengths in front of Seduction, which paced her best race for some time. She had to sprint hard wide out from the 500 m and kept fighting hard in the straight. The others, headed by Travel Warrant, were 11 lengths back and well beaten.

Rapid Fella brought his record to two wins and a second from three starts when he made his rivals look second-rate in the Clem Parfitt Stakes, for four-year-olds. He took the lead soon after a mix-up caused by Torque stumbling at the end of 400 m, Local Hanover and Blue Willow being badly checked. Rapid Fella coasted along in front and David McGowan did not have to push him to have two lengths to spare at the line. His win does not affect his mark in the $7500 race for his age group on October 21 and he will start from the front, as will Matai Skipper, which was hampered early and did well to run third from 20m. The pair were split by Jemalin, which should make short work of a maiden field at Forbury Park on Saturday.

Torque did remarkably well to finish ninth after losing so much ground when he almost fell.

King Aurea, which joined Jack Smolenski’s team after he had finished fourth on the first night of the meeting, showed gameness in a tough finish to hold out the favourite, Smooth Charm, by a nose in the Australasia Motor Inn Stakes.

King Aurea was handy on the outer while Secret Knight tried to lead for the last 1200 m. Secret Knight was done with 200 m out and King Aurea took a short lead. Smooth Charm came strongly along the inner near the end, but failed by a nose to get up. Harvey’s Sister battled away gamely for third, but she was three lengths back, a length in front of Secret Knight, with Miss Bromac dropping out to fifth.
