Speedy Girl favoured in Awapuni’s first leg

Special correspondent Wellington

The Marton trainer, Evan Rayner, is experiencing a good run at the moment and it could continue at Awapuni this afternoon when he lines up Speedy Girl in the Young Shaun Handicap, the first leg of the Manawatu Racing Club’s T.A.B. double.

Speedy Girl looks to be in fine touch. She will be ridden by Brian Hibberd and with 50kg is getting 6kg from the race top-weight, Vincere, which with David Walsh up, will carry the full

56kg. The mare had her last race on the course when she beat all but Passive Prince in the Dealers’ Handicap on September 24. Before that she had been fourth at Wanganui and then won at New Plymouth. Vincere, on the other hand, was a winner at New Plymouth on Friday. That was a class 2 race and he took the decision well enough by three lengths. His form has been useful and the win was his second this term, the first coming at Gisborne in August. An Awapuni mare, Nalu,

looks to have prospects as well, her last start third representing a top effort. Le Shah, second in the highweight at Masterton on Saturday, has to be respected as well, while Steel King, Murrand, Bay Corvette, and Candy Case all have some claims. The Temperton-trained Flying Tui, looks as good a prospect as any in the Scotch Reel Handicap, the second leg of the double. A five-year-old, he has shown a degree of promise. He was third favourite in the Masterton Mile last Saturday, but was one of those

to lose any chance in the start from the open stalls. His rider in this one will be Barry Griffin, who was quickly back on the winning road, and he promises to give a good account of himself. Elucidate and Yale are a couple of promising mares and could make a decent go of matters. Elucidate resumed at Hastings last month and was third behind Mr Illusion. Yale, on the other hand, won her first race for the season on the Awapuni track at the Marton meeting.
