Defaulter’s owner

Mr lan Macßae, of Masterton, who died recently, bred the high-class racehorse and successful sire, Defaulter, but did not race the son of Defoe, as was reported in a Press

Association message yester-

day. Mr Macßae offered Defaulter as a yearling at the Trentham sales, and at 170gns the Defoe colt became the property of Mr Harold Greenwood, of Teviotdale, North Canterbury. The Riccarton trainer, Jack Shaw, bid for Defaulter on behalf of Mr Greenwood, and agreed to go to 170gns for the youngster after a bid was disputed by Mr Max Steinberg, of Auckland. The colt was knocked

down to Mr Steinberg’s bid at 170gns, but Mr Steinberg announced he had intended to bid only 165gns. The auctioneer, Mr Reg Inglis, said that he was taking only lOgn bids at that stage, and Defaulter was put up for auction again. Mr Steinberg declined to go to 170gns, but the late Mr Shaw met that price, and Defaulter came to Canterbury to be trained from the Riccarton stable of the late Frank Roberts. In the Greenwood colours he won 22 races from 28 starts and was never beaten at weight-for-age.

Later he became one of New Zealand’s most successful home-bred stallions while at service at the Inglewood Stud.
