Litter on streets
Sir,—As I was born, and have always lived in Christchurch, I am often annoyed to see the amount of litter which accumulates so quickly around this city. There are plenty of opportunities for the people of Christchurch to avoid this problem, which I am sure is as unpleasant for the tourists as it is for me. In the city there are rubbish bins on approximately every fifth lamppost, but these seem to be ignored by most people as litter is still in abundance around the streets. I think fines should be enforced so people will think twice about dropping their litter. This would quickly change the lazy attitudes which most seem to have developed and help keep Christchurch clean and beautiful—Yours, etc.,
C. O’NEILL. September 30, 1983.
