Edward at Cambridge

NZPA London Prince Edward took up residence at Cambridge University at the week-end in a dormitory room with bullet-proof glass. Edward, aged 19, will be one of 400 undergraduates at Jesus College and will study archeology and anthropology, the same subjects Prince Charles read at Trinity College, Cambridge, 15 years ago. Jesus College was founded in 1496 in the reign of the first Tudor monarch, Henry VII. Some students had complained that Prince Edward’s grades were not good enough to get into Cambridge and that he had been admitted only because he was a member of the Royal Family. Spencer Williams, aged 19, a first-year student, said: “I’m slightly annoyed at all the fuss and a bit annoyed that they’ve allowed him in

with such low grades. My main concern is that security could be tightened up now.”

After completing his degree Prince Edward plans a career in the Royal Marines.

Meanwhile Buckingham Palace said yesterday that Prince Philip had cancelled a trip to the Philippines this week because the International Equestrian Federation, which he heads, has switched its annual meeting from Manila to Switzerland.

The spokesman refused to comment on published reports that the Manila meeting had been cancelled to avoid showing support for the Philippines’ President, Mr Ferdinand Marcos, in the aftermath of the assassination of the opposition leader, Benigno Aquino. The Palace would not say why the meeting was switched.
