Masked man takes $15,000
PA Hamilton A masked gunman who robbed the staff at a Hamilton tavern of $15,000 on Saturday was still at large yesterday. The police investigating the robbery said that they had no strong lead on the lone gunman’s identity. A spokesman said the man confronted bar staff at Te Rapa Tavern soon after 11 p.m., as it was closing.
He held up two employees in the bar manager’s office with a handgun. The two employees were taken into an adjoining room and were forced to lie on the floor while the gunman gathered the takings and escaped. Nobody was hurt.
The police said that the man, possibly a Maori, was about 1.78 m tall, of slight to medium build and was wearing rough work clothes.
