Winning dash for $1 motor-cycle
Mr Martin Keen begins his winning dash to reach a motor-cycle selling for $1 at Jack’s Yamaha in Colombo Street on Saturday morning. Hard on his heels is Che Rogers, aged 11. The $1 motor-cycle was offered during the shop’s one-day sale on Saturday to mark a move from Durham Street to Colombo Street premises. The second hand Yamaha 80 motor-cycle was worth about $250. In his desire to get a bargain, Mr Keen began camping outside the shop on Tuesday night and was joined the next morning by Che.
Mr Keen was buying the motor-cycle for his mother, who supplied him with meals during his vigil.
The owner of Jack’s Yamaha, Mr Craig Jones, said the race to the motorcycle had been a close one after the doors were opened, but that Mr Keen was “too long in the legs” for his competitor. Mr Jones’ son, Brent, spent Friday night sleeping in the store for security reasons. Mr Jones said this resulted from an earlier incident when the campers outside the store were pelted with eggs. However, there was no problem on Friday night.
