Bathurst win with co-drivers
NZPA Bathurst, N.S.W. History was created when three drivers stood on the victory dias at Mount Panorama after yesterday’s James Hardie 1000 motor race.
Peter Brock accepted the winner’s trophy from the Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, after beating home his rival, Allan Moffat, by more than a lap.
But Brock used the services of two co-drivers — John Harvey and Larry Perkins — after a neardisaster which saw Brock’s Marlboro Commodore retire with a blown motor after only eight of the 163 laps.
The Bathurst master was able to slot himself into the second Marlboro team car, which started the race with Harvey in the driver’s seat. There was a stunning retirement rate of major contenders, including the B.M.W. and Nissan turbos in the opening hour. Moffat and his Japanese co-driver, Yoshimi Katayama, were unable to keep in touch, falling a lap in arrears just after halfway and then being kept at that margin to the finish.
The S.T.P. Commodore of two Sydney drivers, Allan Grice and Colin Bond, battled fading brakes to take third.
