Forest relay to Owairaka
PA Rotorua A strong Owairaka team staved off the strong challenges of Takapuna and the Korean national team to win the fifth Statecraft senior men’s relay through the Whaka Forest near Rotorua on Saturday. A superb fourth lap by a former top junior athlete, Geoff Shaw, enabled Owairaka to win the 5800 m event in record time.
Takapuna, always in contention, held second from the Korean national team with a long gap to Tauranga Ramblers and last year’s winners, New Plymouth. The Korean team, in New Zealand on a two-month training camp, might have won if its top runner had been fit enough to participate. However, the Koreans were compensated when they easily won the senior women’s event from Tauranga Ramblers.
Tokoroa won the senior men’s event and Rotorua the women’s. Results:
Senior men: Owairaka, 1:28.44, 1; Takapuna, 1:29.03, 2; Korean Nationals, 1:29.08, 3; Tauranga Ramblers, 1:13.23, 4; New Plymouth, 1:30.57, 5.
Senior women: Korean Nationals, 1:45.42, 1; Tauranga Ramblers, 1:47.59, 2; Tokoroa, 1:52.45, 3.
