Early Texas Open lead to Colbert
NZPA San Antonio Jim Colbert of the United States fired a four-under-par 66 on Saturday and gaineo a two-stroke lead after three rounds of the $300,000 Texas Open golf tournament. His total of 16-under-par 194 on the 6525-yard Oak Hills course is the lowest threeround total on the P.G.A. tour this year. An American, Mark Pfeil, with his second straight 63, was alone in second place at 14-uhder-par 196. There were five players tied for third place, another four strokes away at 10-under-par 200. Jay Haas, the defending champion, heads the group that includes fellow-Americans Doug Tewell, David Edwards, George Cadle and Tony Sills. Cadle was alone in third place until he four-putted the final
green. At San Jose, California, Dot Germain capped six-under-par 67 with her second nine-metre putt and Sharon Barrett shot a 68 on Saturday as they joined an Australian, Jane Crafter, for the lead going into the final round of the LPGA San Jose Classic. The defending champion and hometown favourite, Patty Sheehan, struggled to a 72 to stay one stroke off the leaders’ total of four-under-par 142 in this 54-hole tournament Barrett, who turned 22 two weeks ago, hit five birdies in the row as she also rebounded from a first-round 74. Crafter, seeking her first victory in three years on the tour, had a 72 after sharing the first round lead with Sue Fogleman at 70. Fogleman had a 76 in the second round.
