Children’s Day

Sir,—The primary theme of Universal Children’s Day (October 3) is the universality of children. An additional theme is chosen each year to bring the public’s attention to a particularly urgent need of the world’s children. The special theme for 1983 is: “Hungry children — a Challenge to the World’s Conscience.” The 1983 report of U.N.I.C.E.F.’s executive director, James P. Grant, on the state of the world’s children describes the seriousness 6f malnutrition. This inspiring report also describes practical, low cost, easily-accessible solutions which are the result of social and scientific breakthroughs and have suddenly made it possible to end child malnutrition. The most effective attack ever made against child malnutrition can now be mounted. World-wide commitment is required so that today’s opportunities can be seized. If the will is found to do this, then the goal of adequate food and health for the vast majority of the world’s children need not be a dream deferred. — Yours, etc., JUDY EVANS. September 29, 1983.
