Slick threatens birds
NZPA London Thousands of birds, including several rare species, yesterday risked a sticky death from a giant oil slick washed on to beaches along the Humber Estuary in north east England after an Iranian tanker was holed at Immingham. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds was especially anxious because rare Siberian geese winter and mate in the region. The birds are expected any day in their long flight from Russia.
Besides mounting rescues, the society planned to hand over some 360 litres of concentrated solvents to authorities battling the slick. More than 3000 tonnes of Nigerian light crude seeped from the 218,000 ton Sivand after she struck a jetty on Wednesday. The Department of Trade is investigating.
