Few grizzles likely over temporary change of name

Lancaster Park will have a temporary name change today, although whether the people whose job it is to record sporting venues take heed is another matter.

The idea, which came from the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, is that the park be known today as the Alex Wyllie Rugby Stadium, in recognition of the Canterbury coach’s efforts this year and last.

In promoting the name change, Sir Hamish said that not only had the Canterbury side given rugby in the province a great boost

but it had done a lot for the economy of Christchurch by attracting so many visitors to its matches. The chairman of the Victory Park Board, Mr D. L. Gallop, said last evening that he was sure the board would be happy to enter into the spirit of the proposal and permit a temporary name change. “After all, the board has good reason to be grateful to Alex and the team for what it has done for the board’s finances,” said Mr Gallop. So it would seem that for a day Lancaster Park will

be the Alex Wyllie Rugby Stadium. This begs the question as to whether all the tickets sold for this afternoon’s match are, in fact, valid. Also, in years to come a good sports question could be what was the venue for the last Ranfurly Shield match of the 1983 season. In Parliament yesterday the member of Parliament for Manawatu, Mr M. E. Cox, said the green-and-whites would thrash Canterbury today. Mr Cox moved a notice of motion at the beginning of the day’s sitting: “That after

recently making the Waikato representative rugby team look like a fourth-grade outfit, and severely embarrassing the pride of Counties, the green-and-whites from Manawatu after thrashing the Cantabrians this Saturday will be returning the Ranfurly Shield to its rightful home — Manawatu." The member of Parliament for Rangiora, Mr D. F. Quigley, on a point of order, asked the Speaker to check the authenticity of the motion because it might not be valid by Monday. Preview, back page
