Police dog to receive medal
PA Auckland A police dog which was slashed to death by a man with a samurai sword will be awarded posthumously the R.S.P.C.A.’s silver medal of merit. The award will be presented in Auckland on Saturday. It is the second silver medal made posthumously this month — Mindy, a dachshund which saved the lives of a family from fire at Fairton, near Ashburton, won the other. Panzer, a 30-month-old German shepherd, was killed in July when he confronted the man brandishing the sword in Queen Street, Auckland. Mr Lee Murdoch, vicepatron of the society, will present the medal to Panzer’s handler, Constable Grant Bradford. A bronze medal of merit will be presented to Constable Eion Gorrie, whose police dog, Ebba, was run over by a car being chased by the police in March.
