Life jail terms
PA Wellington Two men who drowned another man, having failed to cut his throat and strangle him, have been jailed for life for murder. James Hemi Hukanui Reha, aged 19, unemployed, and Paul Manihera, aged 21, unemployed, yesterday pleaded guilty to the murder of Mark Norman Harkin at Lower Hutt on March 5. Mr Justice Quilliam said that there was only one sentence he could impose, and that was life imprisonment. When the depositions were taken in the District Court at Lower Hutt on
May 27 the Court heard that the accused had been drinking in the Hutt Park Hotel
and had discussed robbing Mr Harkin. Another person was told to take the deceased to the Hutt River stopbank after Mr Harkin had cashed a cheque. The accused discussed killing Mr Harkin to prevent him talking. They assaulted him and kicked him. Reha told police that he stood on Mr Harkin’s head, put a belt around his throat—pulled on it as hard as he could—and tried to cut his throat with a spur. They then rolled Mr Harkin into the river and stood on his head when it was under the water.
They robbed Mr Harkin of a watch, a cheque and $lB, the Court was told.
