Manufacturing
Statistics Department figures for the June 1983 quarter show a slowdown in manufacturing. The quarterly survey of manufacturing shows sales were 3.3 per cent down on the same quarter last year. Purchases and other operating expenses dropped 7.3 per cent, salaries and wages dropped 4.3 per cent and hours worked, 9.2 per cent. Additions to fixed assets in manufacturing rose between the two quarters 30.7 per cent, to be $143.1M in June this year. The main growth areas were the chemical, paper and printing industries.
