Overdue win for Kawarau Chip?
By
G. K. YULE
The Central Otago-owned Kawarau Chip should break through for an overdue first win for the season in the Mount Somers Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. treble at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s spring meeting today. In all of her races this spring Kawarau Chip has finished on strongly from a fair way back, her three most recent starts resulting in a fifth and two seconds. She is a stout stayer and the 3200 m in this race will provide her with a splendid winning opportunity. Lord Zetland beat Kawarau Chip by a length and a half in fast time for 2600 m at Addington Race-
way on September 16. On that occasion she gave him a start of 20m, but this time they will meet on level terms.
A high opinion is held of Lord Zetland and should he manage to beat Kawarau Chip today if both horses receive reasonable runs, his future would be extremely rosy. Game Command, one of several capable horses handicapped on 20m, has been a model of consistency in richer company this spring. His latest start resulted in a nose defeat at the hands of Idle Rules on September 16, while a few days earlier he was a close fourth to Tussle in the Odlins Ordeal Cup.
Game Command has some sound staying efforts to his credit and he should make his presence felt.
Mister Morn is an interesting contestant. A former stablemate of Lord Zetland, he has performed with credit at recent trials and it might not be wise to leave him out of calculations. He showed much promise earlier in his career. Tarex, winner of this race 12 months ago, Lady Sadie, McQueen and Worthy Adios are others capable of racing prominently, but they will be tested to match Kawarau Chip, Lord Zetland and Game Command.
