Spectacular development

Beschonaria yuccoides, a hardy Mexican plant with large stiffish flax-like leaves, is coming now into full flower at present. The process of development prior to bud burst is quiet spectacular as first the unbranched pinkish flower spikes rise some two

meres or so from the centre of the plant. Gradually the bud unfurls and as it does so its increasing weight tends to bend the stem. The inflorescences break out more or less one at a time, bell shaped, green with deep pink bracts, and remain for at least a fortnight, depend-

ing somewhat on the weather, before they begin to fade.

This is an undemanding plant which requires little more than a warm, sunny position and at least a square metre of room to grow.
