Donizetti out of Dumedim (Guineas

By J. J. BOYLE

Donizetti was allowed to show some of his sharp speed in training at Riccarton yesterday.

It would have been his winding-up gallop for the Dunedin Guineas if a dry track had been likely at Wingatui tomorrow. But his trainer, John Bourne, decided to stay at home on learning later yesterday morning that Wingatui will be no place tomorrow for top-of-the-ground performers. Donizetti showed he has thrived on recent racing when he sprinted 600 m with Lampray in 38s on the small No. 8 grass yesterday.

His stablemates, Salutation, Chiasso, and Super Micron will also miss their

engagements at Wingatui. Sovereign’s Will, a Ric-carton-trained candidate for the Otago Racing Club’s Grandstand Handicap, ran 1200 m in lmin 23.95. King of Light, his two-year-old stablemate, joined him for the last 600 m in 41.65.

Marche Noir, a form runner for the Dunedin Guineas, did striding work over two rounds and was allowed to quicken slightly the second time, completing his final 600 m in 44.4. He appears to have thrived. Gaffa was paired with Just From Beechwood to run 600 m in 425.

Charles Beaufort, whose preparation is aimed at the New Zealand Cup, was keen to quicken while running 1200 m in lmin 21.85, the

opening 600 m in 40.4.

Afore Ye, a form runner in the hurdles at Wingatui, had his trainer, Garth Jackson up, when he ran 1600 m easily in lmin 58.65, the last 600 m in 455. Rhett’s Mate and Hoto Hui Lad, which will run for the Ray Harris stable at Wingatui, sprinted 600 m in 39.25.

Third Degree and Damazam recorded lmin 23.2 s for 1200 m, and 41.7 s for last 600 m. Hint started near the 1200 m, and returned 41s for her last 600 m. Her stablemate, Grey Sapphire, returned 41.7.

Pronto King, a runner for Michael Pitman’s stable in the Dunedin Guineas, was let off with pace work.
