Our Mana-Derby clash big attraction at Ashburton

By

G. K. YULE

The long-awaited first meeting between Our Mana and Derby and the first appearances for the season of two outstanding mares in Armalight and Hilarious Guest will highlight the Ashburton Flying Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow.

This stellar attraction was to have taken place in the Latimer Motor Lodge Handicap at Addington Raceway on September 10, but the trainer, Richard Brosnan, scratched Derby after anticipating a slushy track, which did not eventuate.

With Derby out of the field, the way was left clear for Our Mana to make his rivals look second-rate and he won with much in hand in 3min 23.8 s for the 2600 m, an astounding run on the night. Our Mana has drawn No. 4, two places inside Derby, in tomorrow’s race and there is little doubt that they will vie for favouritism. Their performances suggest that there might not be much between them at the finish.

However, Our Mana has had limited experience in the top company and the fact that he has had 15 starts against 11 by his rival, might give him a slight advantage. ' Derby, trying for his eighth consecutive win, is highly talented. Brosnan will probably be more interested in qualifying him for the $lOO,OOO New Zealand Cup on November 8 now that Bonnie’s Chance is causing problems. He is certain to make Our Mana work hard for his eleventh victory.

Armalight, on 10m and the only horse behind the front, is capable of making a race of it with Our Mana and Derby. Armalight has had limited experience at trials and, should the pace be a testing one, she will . find it hard to get through or round her rivals. Even so, a mare of her qualities would only have to be half right to beat most in the field and her lack of seasoning might not be completely against her. Hilarious Guest has looked in need of racing when she has paraded at trials. She has shown improvement at each appearance and might not be far from showing form. Enterprise and Amaze could add interest to the finish as could Borana, which was so impressive when racing against Hands Down and Our Mana at the National meeting. Timely Play, Double Cove and Diamond Moose could be as good as any in the second leg of the double, the P.G. Winter Barley Handicap, which will be run over Jbt: 11 Tab: CY Race 1 11.5 CHERTBEY HANDICAP
