Parliament rose at 1.48 a.m. yesterday after sitting under urgency. Members gave the Customs Orders Confirmation Bill a third reading before the sitting ended.
When the House resumed at 2.30 p.m., the Leader of the House. Mr Thomson, moved that discussion of Ministerial answers to questions be held on October 12 and thereafter on alternate Wednesdays. Mr Thomson made a Ministerial statement about a debate in Parliament on Wednesday night on the Representation Commission. Members gave nine notices of motion. The District Courts Amendment Bill was introduced and referred to the Statutes Revision Select Committee. Ministers answered 18 questions. The Dunedin District Drainage and Sewerage Amendment Bill was debated in its committee stages and was given its third reading. The Speaker, Sir Richard Harrison, declined a request by Mr R. J. Tizard (Lab., Otahuhu) that the House be adjourned to discuss an announcement that the cost of the Marsden Point Oil refinery project had increased $lOO million. The Wanganui City Council Vesting and Empowering Bill was given its second reading.
The House continued debating the Rural Bank estimates.
The debate was interrupted when the House adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m.
Parliament debated the Agriculture and Fisheries estimates when the House resumed at 7.30 p.m., later moving on to Labour Department estimates.
The House rose at 10.30 p.m.
