Hyde in kart
Avon Hyde, the Christchurch driver who success-
fully made the transition from karts to big saloons in March last year, will make a surprise appearance in a kart at Sunday’s Ruapuna meeting. The potent new Commodore supercar that Clyde Collins is building for Hyde is not yet ready, so Hyde will drive Peter Cunliffe’s Zip Yamaha 250 kart in the three superkart races at Ruapuna. Among Hyde’s opposition will be the national superkart champion, Steve Jones, of Christchurch (Zip Rotax), John Hamilton (Hamilton Rotax), Jim Rouse (Zip Rotax), ex-speedway driver, Wayne Denovan (Zip Rotax),
and Derek Wilson (Tapper Yamaha). A number of 125 gearbox karts will fill out the field on Sunday for the first round of a five-round superkart series to be run at Ruapuna and Levels this season. Although the karts are tiny, they have incredible speed and cornering ability and the fastest should hit over 210km/h down Ruapuna’s main straight and turn in 41 to 42s laps, faster than the “big-banger” saloons. Local motor-cycle racers will also have a chance to dust off their old bikes or try out new ones, as there will be three motor-cycle races on Sunday.
